Google may bring refreshed camera app in Pixel 8: What is changing

Google Pixel smartphones are famous for their computational photography and the Pixel 7 series brought in a new hardware setup along with more powerful ‘software magic’ to treat users. However, one thing that has remained largely unchanged is the Camera app and this is going to change soon.

Citing an anonymous source inside Google, a report by Android Authority claims that the revamped Google Camera app will first launch on the Pixel 8 series. Here’s what is changing.

Separate photo and video modes
Currently, Pixel 7 Pro Camera app has a single carousel of options to choose from that is situated at the bottom of the UI. The new Camera app is said to have separate photo and video modes via a switch under the mode selection bar.

So users will have to select which type of content (photo or video) they want to shoot and then specify the exact mode (long exposure, portrait/ Cinematic pan, blur) they want to shoot in.

Camera swap button and gallery preview button
The new Google Camera app may also have a swapped location of the camera switch button and the gallery preview button. The camera switch button has been moved to the right side of the capture button and gallery preview to the left.

The settings menu will pop up when the screen is swiped from the bottom up and users can also tap the settings icon in the bottom left, the report noted.

Reshuffling of modes
Google Camera app may have some reshuffled UI to make some modes prominent. For example, the “Motion” tab has been split into “Long Exposure” and “Action Pan.” The “Cinematic” stabilisation mode may also get a new name: “pan.”

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro camera leaks
It has been reported that both Pixel 8 series phones will receive some camera upgrades. Both phones may come with Samsung GN2 50MP main sensors (from Samsung GN1 50MP sensors) that have a larger size and capture 35% more light than the GN1. This means brighter and sharper low light photos.

The ultra-wide-angle camera on the Pixel 8 Pro may also be upgraded from the current 12MP Sony IMX386 to 64MP Sony IMX787 camera — the one used in the Pixel 7a. Pixel 8 may get a Sony IMX386 ultra-wide-angle camera.

The selfie cameras are said to remain the same as before – 11MP sensors on both devices. The 5X optical telephoto camera on the Pixel 7 Pro is also said to remain the same on the Pixel 8 Pro.
