Sony’s Project Q handheld gaming console may run Android: All details

Sony announced that it will be bringing PlayStation Portable, aka PSP, in a new avatar. Called Project Q, the device will enable users to stream any game from PlayStation 5 console. It will reportedly make its debut in November and ahead of the launch, a glimpse of the console is seen on the internet.

A leaked video of the PlayStation Project Q suggests that it will run on the Android OS. The video on Twitter suggested that a basic version of Android OS is running on a plastic-wrapped device. It shows a menu system and a QR code.

As seen in May, the display is set in the middle of a DualSense controller with built-in microphones, speakers, triggers and buttons.

“Internally known as ‘Project Q,’ it has an 8-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller,” the company said at the launch.

When Sony showed off the device in May this year, it said that the device would feature an 8-inch HD display. It would enable PlayStation gamers to stream all PS5 games, except PlayStation VR2 titles, at up to 1080P resolution at 60fps over WiFi.

“The device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV,” Sony said. It could also let users emulate retro PS games from devices like PSP and PS Vita.

The device will compete with Nintendo Switch, the world’s most popular handheld gaming console, the Steam Deck, and the recently launched Asus ROG Ally, which runs Microsoft Windows.

But it seems that in order to play games on an upcoming handheld device, they must be installed on a PlayStation 5 console itself, which could mean that it is designed as a companion for PS5 and not something that would play games natively like a Steam Deck or stream them from the cloud.
