Baidu’s Ernie bot will soon arrive in Chinese cars, here’s how

Chinese search giant Baidu is set to integrate its AI model Ernie into its vehicles. According to a report by South China Morning Post, China’s largest sport-utility vehicle (SUV) assembler, Great Wall Motor is set to become the first carmaker to use Baidu’s ChatGPT-like AI model. This technology will enable car drivers to communicate with the car.

In a statement, the company announced its partnership with Baidu to develop vehicles fitted with the chatbot tool known as Ernie Bot. This move will reinforce the push to make cars more intelligent and user-friendly.

“Several innovative features have been tested in those vehicles that are being mass-produced. They will be gradually put into commercial use on a wide basis,” Great Wall Motor said in the statement.

However, the company neither revealed the launch date of its first vehicle that will include conversational technology nor did it mention the models that will be the first ones to feature the built-in Ernie Bot.

How Ernie Bot will work in cars
Apart from having human-like conversations, Baidu’s Ernie Bot will also be able to perform more functions. This includes journey planning, in-car entertainment and even generating images based on text inputs.

The report claims that young motorists in China are looking up to EVs featuring autonomous driving technology and digital cockpits. In April, UBS analyst Paul Gong also predicted that electric car sales in China will increase by 35% to 8.8 million units in 2023. China’s premium EV segment is currently dominated by Tesla, followed by three domestic start-ups – Li Auto, Nio and Xpeng.

Other carmakers are also planning to use Ernie Bot
Baidu also said that other car brands including Lynk and Smart are also planning to build cars fitted with the technology. In February, the company announced that its electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary Jidu Auto will also use Ernie Bot in its cars. Jidu is yet to mass-produce a car. The Baidu subsidiary plans to launch its first production model by the end of 2023.
