5G smartphone shipments in India cross 100 million units in Q2 2023: Report

5G-enabled smartphones saw an upturn in sales, surpassing 100 million units, accounting for half of the total smartphone shipments in Q2 2023.

According to a report released on Friday by CyberMedia Research (CMR), Samsung and OnePlus led the way in 5G smartphone shipments in India during Q2 2023, with a volume share of 24% and 20%, respectively.

While the overall shipments shrunk by 6 per cent, the 5G smartphone shipments grew by 45 per cent YoY in India during Q2 2023, with over 100 million units shipped. Furthermore, the share of 5G smartphones in overall shipments increased to 47 per cent in Q2 2023, up from 31 per cent in Q2 2022.

According to a report, India saw the shipment of 17 million 5G smartphones in Q2 of 2023, with an average selling price of $366 (around Rs 30,000).

Samsung, Vivo, and OnePlus emerged as the top contenders in the 5G segment, holding a combined share of 54%.

In Q2 2023, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi took the top three spots in the smartphone market with 18 per cent, 15 per cent, and 15 per cent market share, respectively. Realme and Oppo followed with 12 per cent and 10 per cent market share.

The value-for-money smartphone segment, priced up to Rs 25,000, had the largest share with 72 per cent, but sales declined by 16 per cent YoY due to low demand.

Conversely, the affordable smartphone segment priced below Rs 7,000 saw a significant growth of 51 per cent year-on-year, driven by Redmi A2 and Infinix 7 HD.

The premium segment, priced between INR 25,000 and 50,000, recorded a 9 per cent year-on-year growth. The super-premium segment, priced between INR 50,000 and INR 1,00,000 and the uber-premium segment priced above INR 1,00,000 grew by 95 per cent and 133 per cent year-on-year, respectively, leading to an overall increase in smartphone average selling price by 17 per cent year-on-year.

“This single-digit decline is attributed to the improved macroeconomic condition positively impacting consumer demand and OEMs strategic measures to clear their existing stocks in preparation for the upcoming festive season. Despite the overall decline in smartphone shipments, the 5G smartphone segment showed promising performance capturing 47 per cent market share (up from 31 per cent in Q2 2022). The overall feature phone segment grew 9% year-on-year,” said Shipra Sinha, Analyst- Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR).
