iPhone 15 Pro models may get Wi-Fi 6E connectivity: What it means for users

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 series in the coming months. The upcoming iPhone lineup will likely include four smartphones — iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to a report by MacRumors, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley have shared a research note to outline new connectivity options for the iPhone 15 series.

The report notes that Apple will integrate Wi-Fi 6E into some of its iPhone 15 models. As per the report, the upgraded connectivity option will be exclusive to the Pro models — iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These models will be the first iPhones to get Wi-Fi 6E support.

However, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are expected to continue using the regular Wi-Fi 6 standard which is available on iPhone 14 models. Wi-Fi 6E will enable faster and more reliable wireless connectivity on iPhone 15 Pro smartphones.

What is Wi-Fi 6E and how will it work
Wi-Fi 6 which is available in iPhone 14 models supports only two wireless network bands — 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi 6E offers increased bandwidth as it works with the newer 6GHz band. Wi-Fi 6E promises faster wireless speeds, lower latency and less signal interference. However, users will need to connect their iPhones to a Wi-Fi 6E-supported router to access the new standard.

Multiple brands including TP-Link, Asus, and Netgear offer routers that support the Wi-Fi 6E standard. Apple has shared a support document which states that both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands will also remain enabled in routers supporting Wi-Fi 6E. The company notes that these routers will preferably use a single network name (SSID) across all bands.

Apple also mentions that if the router isn’t using the same name for all bands, iPhones will be able to identify the network as having limited compatibility. Moreover, users will also be able to disable Wi-Fi 6E mode on their iPhones. The Cupertino-based tech giant has also shared a list of devices that support Wi-Fi 6E other than iPhones.

Apple devices that support Wi-Fi 6E network:

  • MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023) or MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2023)
  • Mac mini (2023)
  • Mac Studio (2023)
  • Mac Pro (2023)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation)
