What type of customer will benefit the most from Pure Storage’s 300 TB NVMe SSD?

———-

It looks like the future of data storage is about to become a lot bigger. Pure Storage, a company specialising in enterprise data storage, have revealed plans for a colossal 300TB NVMe SSD aiming for a tentative 2026 launch date.

The sheer size of this SSD would be a major game-changer for the data storage world, with this capacity reaching far outpacing the largest current NVMe model’s 30TB capacity. It would be by far the largest available NVMe drive, and as such would be targeted at enterprise-level use only.

The motherboard used in the SSDs would already be a major leap for the SSD market. With traditional SSDs, each memory controller needs to directly address the flash chips, with the capacity of each memory controller currently maxing out at 8TB due to physical capacity limitations. The 300TB model would utilise the PCIe Gen 5.0 hardware platform, which allows for direct addressing of multiple storage devices. This would overcome the capacity limit of previous controllers and yield much higher capacities.

Despite the impressive capacity, Pure Storage promises that the drive will still remain small enough with a standard 2.5” fitment. As NVMe SSDs are optimised for random access, this could provide enterprise users with a massive improvement in I/O latency compared to traditional spinning drives, while also pushing much higher throughput capabilities.

Pure Storage estimate that their upcoming NVMe drive would be ready for commercial use within the next 5 years, although customers will likely need to wait until 2026 for actual product availability. Other companies are already planning ahead for an NVMe future, with Intel already prepping for their H10 NVMe hybrid SSD.

It’s an exciting time for the data storage industry, as the technology which we use to store and move data looks set to become a lot bigger and faster. Enterprises and large scale IT operations can now look forward to having access to NVMe drives with unprecedented exponential storage and data transfer capacities, unlocking possibilities which were previously inconceivable.
