Spencer Admits Microsoft’s 2022 Gaming Output Was Too Light

The gaming industry was dealt a blow when Microsoft’s Phil Spencer revealed the company hasn’t done enough to meet the expectations of its customers when it comes to the number of console games it has released in the past year.

In an interview, Spencer admitted Microsoft was “light in gaming content” for its customers this calendar year and should have done more to bring more games to the Xbox platform. Spencer pointed to the amount of time that has passed since the original Xbox was released and how it had been a challenge to keep up with the growing demand for new titles.

He further went on to explain how the company has relied heavily on its large library of older classics and backward compatible titles to make up the difference, hoping these would prove sufficient to sate the appetite of gamers. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as Spencer noted gamers were “hungry for new and creative experiences that they haven’t seen before” and Microsoft has been “too slow lately” to meet these expectations.

Microsoft is well aware of the issue and is focusing its efforts on 2022 with a renewed focus on the number of game releases and content it can deliver. Spencer believes the team will be able to meet those expectations, and gamers should have a lot more to play this time next year.

The successful launch of the Xbox Series X has been great for Microsoft, but many have noted that the launch lineup was sparse and lacked depth. With all that said, Microsoft is making sure to keep up with the demand and provide something new for all gamers next year. The move, albeit late, means that Xbox gamers can finally look forward to some new and exciting games to play.
