2023 14-Inch MacBook Pro Teardown Featuring The M2 Pro SoC Finds Virtually Zero Difference Between The Older Model

It is no secret that the Apple MacBook Pro range of laptops have been some of the best-performing machines on the market in recent years and the latest model of the series, the 14-inch MacBook Pro, is no exception. Released in 2023, this laptop sports the new Apple designed and manufactured M2 Pro SoC, the latest and most powerful chip the company has ever made. However, when it recently underwent a detailed teardown inspection, what was discovered was that, despite the impressive specs of the new M2 Pro SoC, the 14-inch MacBook Pro was almost identical to the previous model on the inside.

The teardown was conducted by iFixit, who have been known to conduct some of the most detailed and comprehensive teardowns available. The inspection revealed that the only changes apparent inside the device were in the locations where the new M2 Pro SoC was used. The rest of the MacBook Pro model looked to be almost exactly the same as the previous one, with the same Intel processors and memory chips.

This could mean one of two things: either the M2 Pro SoC is actually doing a great job at boosting performance without the need for much internal change, or the MacBook Pro design wasn’t ever a factor that hindered its performance in the first place. It’s likely the former as the M2 Pro SoC is an incredibly powerful piece of technology and, if it can boost the performance of a laptop as well-designed as the 14-inch MacBook Pro, then it may well be one of the most powerful chips on the market.

However, this teardown could also reveal that Apple hasn’t necessarily been taking enough risks when designing their new devices. If the internal design of the new MacBook Pro is virtually indistinguishable from the previous model, then this could imply that Apple hasn’t been taking risks in terms of hardware design which could be hindering the potential of their products.

Either way though, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is still one of the most powerful laptops on the market, and the fact that the M2 Pro SoC has evidently made virtually no difference to the internal design bolds well for its performance-boosting capabilities.
