First released in December of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultra, the next iteration of the popular open world RPG game Cyberpunk 2077, has been touted for its improved graphics, optimization, and performance. As part of its upgrade, the game now takes advantage of Nvidia’s RTX technology to enable ray-tracing effects. However, advanced users have taken this performance to the next level with the new ‘Overdrive’ mode. This mode, which allows users to adjust their game settings to gain a higher performance, is now available for users to take advantage of.

Recently, a comparison video of both the Low and Overdrive versions of the game was unveiled and the differences are quite considerable. After the video was released and shared on social media, it quickly garnered attention among players due largely to its impressive graphical output. Even with the Original Ultra version and RTX OFF, the Overdrive mode set-up surpasses it on most counts.

Starting with the worldbuilding, major differences between the two modes are apparent; with clouds popping off the horizon and textures that look more realistic, the presence of RTX is clearly evident. Not only that, but the overall lighting in-game has improved as well; with more realistic shadows, more detailed reflections, and far more nuanced lighting and shadow effects, players can enjoy more of the game’s atmospheric beauty in full magnitude.

In addition, the performance of the game is also improved exponentially in the Overdrive mode; smoother framerates, less stutter and overall better performance certainly beats out the original Ultra set-up. Specialties such as ray-tracing effects are far more prominent, with objects such as gun barrels and other metal surfaces reflecting the light naturally and realistically. The same goes for environmental lighting, with the Overdrive bringing out much more detail and variety that would have otherwise gone unnoticed in the Ultra preset.

Considering that the performance this mode offers is as good as it gets, it’s perhaps no surprise that players who have given it a chance have been thoroughly impressed. A testament to this is that many of the people who have shown the video across different media platforms have nothing but positive comments about it. Although the game’s optimized version may be coming sometime in the near future, it seems that the Overdrive mode proves that you can still get an excellent graphical experience in the original version.
